DOIs are implemented using The Handle System: a protocol for general-purpose distributed information systems designed to provide global name services for use in networks such as the Internet. DOI uses for its optional object specification a DOI Data Model (a.k.a. metadata) and the indecs Data Dictionary. The DOI system provides a technical and social infrastructure for the registration and use of persistent interoperable identifiers, called DOIs, for use on digital networks. It is a simple and elegant way of registering and resolving unique identifiers. This means that we can scale to cope with enormous loads; more than 3 billion DOIs are resolved every month. Type or paste a known DOI name exactly—including its prefix and suffix—into the text box below and then ‘submit’ to resolve it. THE BENEFITS: WHAT PROBLEMS CAN DOIS SOLVE? KNOWING WHAT’S WHAT, NOW AND IN THE FUTURE The DOI is a persistent identifier, it is a long-lasting reference to an object or to information about an object. The object can be anything physical, digital, or abstract. Keeping track of objects like this over time is a problem. DOI® Handbook The DOI Handbook is the main source of information about the DOI System (DOI identifies the latest current version of the. Approximately 300 million DOIs have been assigned to date. The users come from almost every country in the world. There are around 500 DOI resolutions per second. 7. Can the DOI system use, or work with, existing identifier schemes? Yes. See the DOI Handbook for more information. 8. What can a DOI name be assigned to? DOIs solve a common problem: keeping track of things. Things can be matter, material, content, or activities. Designed to be used by humans as well as machines, DOIs identify objects persistently. They allow things to be uniquely identified and accessed reliably. You know what you have, where it is, and others can track it too. Select style: Begin typing (e.g. Chicago or IEEE.) or use the drop down menu. Users can be any person or their machine that wants to resolve a DOI name. Users do not have to be members and may use the DOI Foundation proxy as often as they like. DOIs are, and will always be, free to resolve. Scroll down for more details on our members and users.
